TERMINOLOGY
What does BU mean?+
BU stands for Brilliant Uncirculated. This can mean two different things depending on which type of coin we are referring to. When describing modern coins like the Silver Maple, American Eagle, etc. BU would mean that the coin is pretty much brand new and freshly minted. Whereas on a vintage coin on the other hand, to classic or vintage coins, BU means that the coin would grade a 60 or higher on the Sheldon scale. When referring to modern coins, BU generally means that the coin has eye appeal close to or equivalent to that of a coin freshly minted. Please keep in mind that the claim that any milk spots, toning or damage immediately removes a coin from the BU designation is incorrect.
What does Circulated mean?+
Circulated coins are bullion coins that have been passed around from before and may contain minor imperfections. They are mostly coins minted from previous years.
What does Assay mean?+
Assay is a test that is used to determine the purity and weight of the precious metal.
