A Buffalo Silver Nickel was created for the United States Mint in 1913 by James Earle Fraser, who grew up in the Upper Midwest. He designed a nickel for the United States Mint, inspired by his childhood experiences in the Upper Midwest. Throughout his childhood, he followed his father, a railroad worker who frequently traveled across Minnesota and Dakota.
SilverTowne Buffalo Bar’s obverse depicts a right-profile portrait of a Native American. Fraser combined the facial features of numerous tribal leaders of the time rather than selecting one individual. In addition to the word “Liberty” engraved on the square portion of the obverse design, the bar also contains information regarding purity, metal content, weight, and metal content.
On the back of each of these 10-ounce, SilverTowne Buffalo Silver Bars are a picture of Black Diamond. That’s actually where he lived and prowled during the early 20th century in Central Park Zoo in New York City. The American black bison inspired Fraser’s reverse design on the Buffalo Nickel.
A cross-hatched design field surrounds the words “United States of America” and “E Pluribus Unum” on the reverse.
