On the obverse, we see a combination of traditional and modern art styles, echoing Bhutan’s modernisation policy of balancing modernisation with tradition. The blissful rabbit, adorned with big clouds and leaves that represent its joyous adventures in Bhutan’s vast plains and forests, grants everyone good fortune.
The other side of the coin design shows Mount Jomolhari, which sits high up in the Himalayas, in part on the border of Bhutan. Mountain Jomolhari is considered sacred to Buddhists as it is the abode of one of the five Tseringma sisters – the female protector goddess (Jomo) of Bhutan.
