More About the NASA Logo

In 1959, James Modarelli conceived the meatball logo, which stayed in use until 1975. The early vision presented NASA as a program capable of guiding the United States of America into unexplored territory. 

The design had a globe representing Earth, stars representing space research, and red chevrons serving as wings to transport aeronautics information, all of which were encompassed by an orbiting spacecraft. The term “meatball logo” wasn’t applied to the design until 1975, when NASA opted for a more modern style and adopted the retro worm emblem instead.
