There is now a new addition to Rwanda’s popular Lunar Ounce collection. A different zodiac sign is depicted in each annual release based on the Chinese lunar calendar. These highly sought-after coins are amazing for collectors and investors.

Rwanda Lunar Ounce coins represent the rich tradition of minting bullion coins with Chinese themes. The reverse design changes yearly based on the Chinese lunar calendar, and the 2023 reverse celebrates the Rabbit Year. Chinese element theory attributes each zodiac sign to one of five elements: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, each appearing every 60 years.

The obverse features Rwanda’s official seal as well as the legal tender face value of the coin and inscriptions indicating the coin’s status as a silver coin in Kinyarwanda (the Rwandan national language).

A geometric-style rabbit appears on the reverse against a background that resembles rock tiles, with the Chinese character for rabbit, the inscription “LUNAR OUNCE 2023”, and the words “1 OZ FINE SILVER 999”.

In 2017, the Lunar Ounce series made its debut and became popular in many precious metal portfolios worldwide due to its limited mintage and annual design change. The first twelve zodiac signs were determined during the Chinese emperor Jade’s Great Race with animals. Chinese Zodiac animals were those that crossed rivers first.
