2022 1 Oz silver Pelican Rwanda sheet of 10 coins – Bank of Rwanda

Every year, the African Ounce Series honors a different animal or plant that lives in Africa. The designs of the series also change every year to show this. The Pelican is the topic of the 15th issue of the African Ounce Series that was produced in Rwanda. The motive depicts a scene in Africa with a pelican cradling a newborn animal in its beak. As well, there are the words “AFRICAN OUNCE,” “2022,” and “1 oz FINE SILVER 999.”On the reverse is embroidered the Rwandan coat of arms.

Pelicans are huge waterfowl that are easily identifiable by their distinctive long beaks and enormous pouches that are located on their necks. Pelicans are found all over the world. The pouch in the pelican’s throat has the capacity to store up to 13 liters of food. When the bird is fishing, it also serves as a landing net for its catch. Fish make up the vast majority of a pelican’s diet, regardless of the climate in which it lives (tropical, subtropical, or temperate zones).

The pelican is featured as a heraldic animal on the coats of arms of a number of different jurisdictions, including the state of Louisiana in the United States, Barbados, Arbois (France), and Luckenwalde (Germany), amongst others. The African Ounce Series celebrates a new animal or plant species native to Africa every year; the series’ designs also evolve every year to reflect this.
