Launched in 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Gold Maple Leaf as just the second gold coin issued to investors worldwide after the Gold Krugerrand. Significantly, there was initially a gold content of .999 on the coin, which was then increased to the now standard of .9999, while on the rare occasion, they issued a gold content of .99999 since 2005.
The Royal Canadian Mint issued the first .99999 pure gold Maple Leaf coin in 2005 as an experiment to test the high purity level. The coin was priced at $50 (CAD). Also, the .99999 pure Gold Maple Leaf coins were issued in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, and 2012.
The obverse of these coins features a design of three maple leaves similar to the National Mint’s 2007 Million-Dollar Maple Leaf coin. A single stem connects three maple leaves. While the reverse side features a right-profile bust of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Susanna Blunt, the second Canadian artist ever to depict the reigning monarch.
